Breaking into the fashion modeling industry can be
a bit daunting: you have questions.
-
Why do I need a portfolio?
A portfolio is your visual resume. It showcases your unique look and personality. Without one, it will be very difficult to present yourself to modeling or talent agencies and get signed. Since they are the ones who will book you for jobs, they need to know who you are and what you look like. A selfie won’t do it.

What is a Comp Card?
A comp card (composite card) is a printed marketing tool for models and actors. They serve as the latest and best of a model's portfolio and are used as a business card.
A comp card usually have up to 6 images.
In addition, it lists the model's basic stats – height, weight, and 3 body measurements (bust, waist, hips) for women. For men, it includes suit size, chest, waist and inseam measurements. A comp card also includes shoe size, eye and hair color, nationality, and contact information. -
Do modeling portfolios cost a lot?
They are not inexpensive. A photo session has various costs associated with it. You’re paying for a team of professionals including photographer and makeup artist. There is also the studio cost and image retouching as well.
In addition, there is printing cost for comp cards. -
I've never done a photoshoot, is there anything I should do before my photo session?
Yes, come prepared!
Be on time!
Bring all of your clothing for the session.
If you really want to be up on things, pick up a few fashion magazines and study some of the posing the models are doing.
A little advice: If you get signed and your agent sends you on a job, don’t be late! be early! Arriving late is a sure way to get fired from your agency. -
What are digitals?
One of the most important things you need to have in order to break into the modeling world are digitals. These are a set of photos that show your natural state, you as you are, without makeup, hair, and stylized clothing.
Besides your personal skills, digitals are what most modeling agencies look at to determine whether you have the potential to be a successful model. -
Will I get signed by a modeling agency?
Ah, the million dollar question. The good news is more than ever, modeling and talent agencies are on the lookout for a wide variety of talent. The days of only super thin models are no longer.
Today’s fashion industry has changed rapidly, resulting in an increase of models of all shapes, sizes and diversity. With all the different areas of modeling, you need to figure out what kind of model you want to be, from high fashion to plus-sized.
With that being said, the bad news is unfortunately, not all will make.
